Tips For Mature Hair
We have put together some of our most trusted tips for mature hair
After reaching our 30's, hair tends to lose its luscious shine and the bounce we once had in our teens and twenties. We may notice the hair has thinned and become more sparse. The diameter of the cuticle starts to shrink and become smaller too, which can add to the overall appearance of aging hair.
What does alcohol do to the hair and why is it used?
Over the year’s many products have claimed to make hair look fuller and to add volume to the hair. These products will generally contain alcohol which is used to dry the roots out, allowing more volume, momentarily giving the appearance of more volume to the hair. These styles will generally be finished with a load of hairspray, another product loaded with alcohol. Traditional hairspray is a gel base and requires high amounts of alcohol to set the fine particle of gel in place before it weighs the hair down. Brushing traditional hairspray with a comb can also cause breakage if the hair is set in place, we would always recommend wetting the hair down with warm water before applying a balancing shampoo to help clarify the hair.
The old wives’ tale of not applying conditioner to the roots of the hair.
This wives’ tale can actually end up weighing your hair down more. Your scalp needs moisture to stay hydrated and nourished, it is skin after all. If the scalp becomes too dry the sebaceous gland can kick into overdrive to combat the dryness by creating more natural oils. This then makes the hair feel like it is oily and flat, making us want to wash it more frequently and use more styling products with drying agents in them. Another point to keep in mind, the roots of your hair need moisture to keep them hydrated, this will help to create healthy glossy new growth. The key is to keep these new ‘baby’ hair hydrated and healthy, keeping in mind it may be several years before they grow long enough to be trimmed!
How do you get around this?
Have a look at the guide we have put together of our top five tips to help mature hair feel glossy and youthful no water what your age.
Wash the hair regularly, but not too often. Try stretching your shampoo out by a day or two, invest in a good quality dry shampoo to get you through the extra day or two. You will find after around fourteen days the sebaceous glands will start to recalibrate, meaning if day three was the day your hair would become greasy, you may find it is now day four. Try adding an extra day every few weeks to find a sweet spot for stretching out your washes.
Know your hair type and what products best suit you. We recommend always washing the hair first with a balancing shampoo to clean out any impurities and pollution buildup. A crucial step for setting up your hair to be its best possible version is to always wash your hair twice. If your hair is fine then use a Balancing Shampoo twice, if your hair is medium to thick we would recommend Hydrating Shampoo as the second shampoo. If the hair is coarse and dry we would recommend two shampoos of Hydrating Shampo. You may find you use a combination of these throughout the year as the seasons change, your hair routine should be tweaked too.
Use a treatment as a conditioner. We found clients had all intentions of using a treat on their hair at home. The problem was they just didn't have the time to apply a treatment, run around for twenty minutes then get back in the shower to rinse it off. They desperately wanted to take care of their hair and give it the love it deserved. Treatment Conditioner was created for all hair types and is an instant treatment, giving your hair the nourishment and hydration it needs instantly. This product won’t feel like your average conditioner, full of synthetic ingredients designed to make your hair feel silky. This hero product is full of over 95% naturally derived and organic ingredients, with extracts of Kakadu Plum which can be traced back to the community harvesting the Kakadu Plums in Lombadina in Western Australia, Lilly Pilly, and Olive Leaf.
Be mindful of any chemicals used to colour your hair. If the hair is starting to show signs of greying, keep in mind grey hair and bleach do not mix well. As grey hair is actually white, having lost the melanin which creates colour, it will tend to leave the hair looking yellow. Try instead for a lighter tint to create dimension.
