4 Unexpected Reasons You Need to Use the Best Conditioner for Fine Hair

Using conditioner when you have fine hair has terrified women for decades. Having experienced limp, flat or oily hair in the past after a wrong shampoo and conditioner recommendation was enough to put you off using conditioner again. What you may not realise it not using a conditioner is actually making your hair oily. We created this post to debunk some myths and give recommendations to get the volume and hair you have always wanted.

  1. Using the Best Conditioner for Fine Hair is a Game-Changer for Hair Growth

You know growing out fine hair is difficult as it’s prone to breakage. This is where conditioner comes in. By adding hydration to your hair, you are replenishing the hair with moisture lost, which happens even with the simplest of hair routines. Giving your hair the moisture it needs with the correct products will help keep your strands in top condition allowing your hair to grow with minimal split ends.

2. The Best Conditioner for Fine Hair in Australia Helps Your Colour Look More Vibrant

Did you know not using conditioner will affect your colour? And the longevity of your colour?

“When people with fine hair don’t use conditioner, their hair strands become excessively dried out. This leads to breakage, split ends and even prevents their colour from ‘taking’ to their hair evenly,” says V&M SPA Founder and hair stylist Victoria.

“When you colour your hair and use a toner to achieve the perfect shade, you are relying on the hair being hydrated so the colour takes evenly. If you don’t use conditioner, the colour results are generally uneven, can grab too much and go darker than the desired look, and fade after a few washes. And there is nothing your hairdresser can do about this.”

If you colour your hair, the last thing you want is for your colour to fade quickly or wash out after a week! So if you colour your hair and have fine hair, using a conditioner is the best solution for a more vibrant hair colour.

3. Using Conditioner Means You Can Wash Your Hair Less Often

When you have fine hair, it’s not uncommon for clients to say their hair is oily and that they need to wash their hair every day. This is understandable, but if you are using the correct shampoo and conditioner for fine hair, you will be able to wash your hair less often, as long as you are conditioning the roots.

Oil production in your scalp changes depending on the moisture balance. If there’s not enough moisture on and around your scalp, your scalp becomes dry and scaly. This dryness triggers your scalp’s oil glands to go into overdrive to correct the imbalance, overproducing oil and leaving your scalp with overproduced oil leaving your hair and scalp feeling greasy and oily.

The solution? Conditioner gently adds hydration and moisture to your scalp to help maintain the ‘oil balance’ of your scalp and hair strands. Keeping your scalp hydrated and moisturised is the key to washing your fine hair less. Apply one pump of conditioner into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together so the product is even on your hands, and then apply this lather to the ends and mid-lengths of your hair. With the excess conditioner, lightly run your hands over your scalp and massage. You do not need to have large amounts of condition to hydrate the roots. Always rinse well.

4. Itchy, dry scalp? The Best Conditioner for Fine Hair is the Key to Scalp Health

Scratching your scalp and finding flecks of dry skin in your hair is not ideal. As we mentioned above, scalp health relies on moisture to balance your oil production. Washing your hair daily or using a shampoo that is too astringent can strip your scalp of oil, throwing off the delicate balance. Applying a small amount of conditioner to the roots and leaving it on for a few minutes in the shower will help to hydrate your dry scalp helping to settle unwanted dryness.

Still not sold on the importance of using conditioner for fine hair? Neither was Jess. Read her story to discover the impressive change adding conditioner to her haircare made on her hair’s length, health and colour. So many clients underestimate that scalp health is the key to healthy hair.

Jess’s Journey to Healthy, Fine Blonde Hair

V&M Spa Founder Victoria has a client, Jess, with fine hair whose story is the perfect example of the power of conditioner.

“It’s not uncommon for fine hair clients not to want to use conditioner,” says Victoria. “The scalp and hair benefits of using conditioner for fine hair clients are amazing, but sometimes clients need to see the damage being caused by not using conditioner, to understand what is really happening to their hair. This was definitely the case with Jess.

For over ten years, Jess opted out of using conditioner. So we managed her bob-length blonde hair with just V&M Spa Balancing Shampoo at home. Her salon visits included a full head of foils with bleach and a light blonde, but no toner. The damage to her hair wasn’t really noticeable until she told me she wanted a change: She wanted to dye her hair a darker blonde and grow her hair a bit longer during COVID.

I explained that making her hair dark blonde would take three visits so we wouldn’t have to ‘fill the hair’ (colour correction). This process would allow me to make her hair lighter again without damaging the hair. Jess gave the OK.

We were all set to go, and I used a very pale, semi-permanent colour around some of the pre-existing blonde foils to break the new colour up a bit. But when we washed it out, the mid-lengths and ends had turned a heavy, muddy-brown colour. We were both quite shocked; I was aware Jess was not using conditioner, and the colour I mixed was a pale light blond, but that’s what happens when the hair is so porous from not using conditioner. The hair’s ‘uptake’ of colour is too strong, leaving the hair a much darker shade than you’re looking for.

Jess was understandably upset. I discussed the reason why the colour hadn’t worked, and she listened and was open to using conditioner in the ways mentioned above. That day she started using our V&M Treatment Conditioner, and her hair completely changed. It’s healthy, shiny, and her hair tone is even and fresh.

Jess is proud of herself for using a pea-sized amount of Treatment Conditioner every time she washes her hair, saying that she has found she also needs to wash her hair less often. This happens because the roots are getting hydrating from the conditioner, so the oil glands don’t need to go into overdrive to hydrate the scalp.”
